When I saw this amazing witch hazel during a visit at the Churchville Nature Reserve it was the first time I had ever laid my eyes on one. The leaves really fascinated me and the light was really lovely that morning so I enjoyed my time just checking out this beautiful gift from mother nature.
The name Witch in witch-hazel has its origins in Middle English wiche, from the Old English wice, meaning "pliant" or "bendable". "Witch hazel" was used in England as a synonym for Wych Elm, Ulmus glabra; American colonists simply extended the familiar name to the new shrub.The leaves and bark of the North American Witch-hazel Hamamelis virginiana may be used to produce an astringent,[10] also referred to as witch hazel, and is used medicinally.
