Description

Tree Spirit Abstract Digital Painting is a recent addition to my Abstract Series.
The Japanese have always sensed that some trees were special. Perhaps the shape of it's trunk or it's scarred surface resembling a face certain trees were identified as the home to tree spirits. The most common term used to describe these spirits is Kodama. Kodama is a very old word spoken long before there was a way to write the word. Over time language developed and Kodama has been written several ways as their written language developed. A Japanese dictionary of the time showed 古多万 as the appropriate Kaji meaning spirits of the trees.Around the Edo period (1603-1868), kodama lost their rank as gods of the forest and were included as just one of Japan's ubiquitous yokai. Kodama became humanized as well.There are stories of kodama falling in love with humans and taking human shape in order to marry their beloved.
