Description
Red Poinsettia Floral Art #2 is a recent addition to my Flowers Series. Poinsettia shrubs native to Mexico can grow ten to fifteen feet tall. I saw some very large and beautiful plants when I was a resident of Florida years ago. That was the first time I realized poinsettias when left to natural means really surpass the potted variety we are used to seeing in the stores.According to the University of Illinois Extension, the showy red blooms of the poinsettia are not flowers. They are modified leaves, otherwise known as bracts. The flowers of a poinsettia plant are the small yellow flowers in the center of the bracts.Poinsettias received their name in the United States in honor of Joel Roberts Poinsett, who introduced the plant into the country in 1828. Poinsett was a botanist, physician and the first United States Ambassador to Mexico. He sent cuttings of the plant he had discovered in Southern Mexico to his home in Charleston, South Carolina. December 12th is Poinsettia Day, which marks the death of Joel Roberts Poinsett in 1851.
Wishing you peace and joy this holiday seasonā„ Thank you very much for stopping by my gallery today:-)

Lovely poinsettia, Robyn - I seem to be obsessed with them lately, having done two new paintings featuring them! L/F
