The family name Odonata comes from the Greek word for tooth as Odonates were believed to have teeth, it is a verified fact now that while they don’t have ‘teeth’ per say, they have strong mandibles that they use to crush their prey.Dragonflies have two sets of wings with muscles in their thorax that aids them to use each wing separately. Dragonflies can fly sideways, backward, and can hover in a single spot for a minute or more. This amazing ability is a factor in their success as aerial ambush predators surprising their prey from any direction then killing them using their strong mandible. Although insects see the dragonfly as a fierce predator humans have nothing to fear since the dragonfly's mandible is too weak to bite a human.Dragonflies lay their eggs in water, and when the larvae hatch, they live underwater for up to two years.
